Brewventures in food

My first culinary stop on my Hawaiian trip was to the Hawaiian Style Cafe, in Waimea, HI. After the glowing recommendation from my seat-mate on the flight here (a cool guy who grew up here and swore by their breakfast)I ha d to make it my first breakfast stop. I've seen shows on tv showcasing Hawaiian foods, especially some of the non-seafood related ones.

Since I was staying in Waikoloa Beach, the drive was a beautiful 30 minutes up the mountain through the arid lava fields into a more lush area of the island. Pulling up to the place, my first thoughts were, "this place looks exactly like the type of place that is going to have awesome food". Being in a small strip with a few other businesses, the exterior is not much to look at. Neither is the interior. But it has a definite local, neighborhood vibe to it. After scanning the menu I settled on the "Da Tita Mok" which consisted of a large plate of fried rice. On top of the rice was a hamburger patty (probably 1/3 pound, or so), two slices of fried Spam, a chicken cutlet, and an over-easy egg. The whole thing was smothered in brown gravy and topped with onions. It was delicious!

Though Hawaiian Style Cafe is only open from 7:30am to 1:30pm, I plan on making time to get back for either pancakes (which a couple next to me ate, and looked amazing) or for a hearty lunch, which I'm sure includes brown gravy in some capacity.

All in all, this place was amazing and the folks there were extremely friendly. And for about 10 bucks (which I'm learning, is not bad for a meal here) I was stuffed when I left.
